Over the course of the last few years, I have experienced several aches, pains, or slight strains. If we flash back even further to when I use to dance professional as a contemporary ballerina, I would say these pains were almost daily. If you walk into a dance studio first thing in the morning you will smell a lot of rubs being rubbed on. Tiger Balm, Icy Hot, Bengay, you name it I’ve probably tried it! Back in my dancing days I would use whatever I could get my hands on, sometimes this was Icy Hot or Tiger Balm, and sometimes a higher grade product such as Bio Freeze or Sombra Cool Therapy Rub. As I’ve gotten older and my aches and pains level has changed, I have gotten more picky about what I want to consume internally and rub externally on my skin.
In order to really live a healthy lifestyle, I needed to evaluate my muscle rubs and try out a few different options. From this, I’ve found 3 options that I really like. Each of these options are based from natural ingredients and aren’t harmful if used frequently. If you have a strain or sprain, the RICE method (rest, ice, compress, elevate) is still sound proof. But if your looking for a muscle relaxing rub, here’s my top picks:
- Dr. Hoy’s Pain Relief Gel & Arnica Boost. I personally use these two products in combination layering pain relief gel first and topping off with Arnica Boost. This combination has a nice icy feeling but penetrates fairly deep. This one really helps with bruising similar to what actual ice would. It helps reduce inflammation in the irritated or injured area, and feels really nice! They even have small sample or travel size packets so you can try before you buy.
- Pain-A-Trate Rub by Melaleuca. This one is my favorite for back aches and pains. I have a lower back condition, and this rub will really get in deep with its penetrating power and ease the inflammation and tension in my back. This rub is powered by 4 primary ingredients: Camphor, menthol, methyl salicylate, and melaleuca oil. Most rubs such as Icy Hot, Bengay etc. have only 2 – 3 of these ingredients, and the quality of ingredient is typically not as pure.
- Deep Blue Rub by Doterra. This one is essential oil based and really great for aches and pains. This is a mint based rub, so it has a lot of icy cooling sensation when applied. This also penetrates deep into the skin and helps with inflammation reduction and healing.
